“Everyone has a story about Cadbury.”
There’s something for everyone in this richly illustrated book. Treats for the chocolate lover and history buff. Insights into market leadership, how it’s won and kept. The record of how a product gained overwhelming support, and how a brand earnt and maintained the trust and affection of millions. After a hundred years of manufacturing in Australia, Cadbury’s renown is hardly surprising. But Robert Crawford goes further back, to find Cadbury already a household name in Colonial times. He explains how the original English firm set up distribution hubs in Melbourne and Sydney, before the opening of a new plant in Tasmania in 1922. This balanced survey looks into the highs and lows of Cadbury chocolates in Australia. Today’s ethos of care for the environment and social equity is traced back to Cadbury’s Quaker origins.
Richly retelling the genesis of famous products like Freddo Frogs, Dairy Milk chocolate, Cherry Ripes and Bournville Cocoa, it reveals Australians’ experience of Cadbury during peacetime and war, depression and prosperity. There’s a lot in it for chocolate lovers and history buffs, but most interesting in this book is what it reveals about generations of Australians, their memories, and their place in the world.
