Hailed in the mid-nineteenth century as \u201can oasis in the wilderness\u201d, the Sydney Mechanics\u2019 School of Arts was founded in 1833 to \u201cdiffuse scientific and other useful knowledge\u201d to the skilled workingmen of the fledgling European settlement of Sydney. Established in emulation of the burgeoning mechanics\u2019 movement in Britain, the founders of this school viewed knowledge as a kind of alchemy that had the potential to change the individual and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
